Magic Square of the Sun is a 4x4m neon installation created for the entrance of De School, Amsterdam’s legendary nightclub. Comprising 84 neon tubes arranged in a 6x6 grid, the piece projected its vibrant light into the street, extending the club’s atmosphere beyond its walls and amplifying anticipation for the night within.
Cycling through geometric patterns, the work merges the retro aesthetics of early arcade visuals with the minimalist lineage of artists like Dan Flavin and Anthony McCall. Conceptually, it bridges light, emotion, and ancient symbolism — its structure referencing the Magic Square of the Sun, a numerological figure associated with energy, balance, and cosmic harmony.
